Stuck on the Side of the Road? What Should You Do First?

On any given day, on any of the toll roads or expressways in or around Plano, McKinney, and the North Dallas area, there is bound to be an accident that brings traffic to a dead stop. In fact, there were 5,499 vehicle crashes in Plano alone in 2018!

While you are stuck in traffic, waiting for some movement, especially on one of these hot, hot Texas summer days, you too could end up on the side of the road if your vehicle’s temperature gauge rises as fast as your patience is disappearing and your car or truck ends up overheating.

You could also wide up ‘pulled to the side’ if you forgot to get gas at Buc-ee’s and your gauge is flashing the dreaded ‘E,’ or maybe you decided to wait to get your vehicle serviced, and now it’s you who needs that tow truck.

Let’s face it; there are many ways, some preventable, some not, that might cause you to need to pull your vehicle over to the side of the road. What to do, FIRST?

Safety First

The first thing you want to do is make sure you and your vehicle are in a safe place. If you are in a traffic lane, try to get to the side of the road. Put on your hazard lights right away. Contact your tow company, friends, and family or roadside assistance if you have it.

If you can’t get to the side of the road, you are safest if you just remain in the car, try not to panic, and call for help. Attempting to cross a busy highway is extremely dangerous.

If you feel that traffic is lighter and you can safely make it out of the middle of the road, make sure you and any passengers are safely out of harm’s way before putting the car in park and moving to safety. In another article, we have explained the places which could be dangerous to wait for a nearby tow truck service.
